When Paths Converge
When Diane and Bob, both in their late fifties, began to talk about retirement they realized their dreams were very different. Diane wanted to move to California to be near their grandchildren. She had thought about turning her jewelry-making hobby into a home based business. Bob dreamed of taking courses at the local college and writing travel guides for places he and Diane would visit. Each time they tried to have a discussion they ended up in gridlock and they began to avoid the conversation all together.
What We Accomplished:
Diane and Bob realized that approaching retirement brought up issues they had not anticipated. Through coaching, they began to appreciate the major life transition they were both going through and to acknowledge that over time, some of their needs, values, and goals had changed. Learning how to communicate so that they both felt listened to and understood BY EACH OTHER opened up the possibility for compromise and negotiation. They were able to prioritize, and to creatively develop a joint vision that was mutually satisfying and dynamic.

A Lifelong Dream, Realized
Beth is a 60 year old attorney who had dreamed of a career in the arts but was encouraged to go to law school by her parents who said, “You’ll never making a living as an artist.” Although successful, she never enjoyed her career and is beginning to realize life doesn’t go on forever. Beth longed to be doing something that gave her a sense of purpose and meaning but wasn’t sure what that would be. As a single parent with a daughter still in college, she was concerned about finances. Her relationship to money had always been one of scarcity, due to growing up in a family where money was always an issue. Beth felt stuck and discouraged.
What We Accomplished:
Through a process of self reflection, rediscovering strengths, and clarifying her values, Beth began to realize that she was missing a sense of joy and passion that she had once experienced through art. This realization helped her open up to possibilities she had never before considered. With input from her financial planner, she was able to take stock of her expenses and spending, Beth then developed a plan to gradually scale back her law practice to give her the time needed to begin to research, network and explore possible next steps — without feeling financially stressed. Beth’s goal is to be working in a career that connects her to the world of art. She has made satisfaction and community contribution a priority in whatever it is that she does next. Beth is well on her way to the living the life she really wants.

Flying Solo in Mid-Life
Lilly is a 64 year old woman divorced from her husband of 40 years. Early in their marriage, she worked part time in real estate — but gave up her career to raise their three children who are, now, successfully launched into their own lives. Lilly has a flair for decorating, frequently helping friends redesign their home and office space. Her dream is to start a business using her decorating experience and skills but she has no idea where to begin, and, like so many women who find themselves alone in mid-life, was unsure of herself.
What We Accomplished:
Lilly was going through major life transition, redefining who she was as a single woman, rediscovering her talents and developing entrepreneurial skills. The coaching process helped Lilly begin to develop a more accurate self image and assess her many talents and strengths. She started to practice meditation during which she began to envision her business. Stepping out of her comfort zone, Lilly joined a group which offered mentoring and support for women business owners. She began taking art and design courses through the local adult education program where she made several personal and professional connections. Lilly decided to bring her long lost love for photography back into her life. She recently celebrated the opening of her design consulting business where her design work was showcased in photographs she, herself, had proudly taken.
